How we selected these plumbers

We built this list from public information, then checked each business by hand.

  1. 1

    Build a long list

We started with 40 Sydney plumbing businesses found through Google Maps searches across the city, then checked each finalist's licence on the NSW register.

  2. 2

    Confirm the licence

Every business needs a current NSW licence on the public register. Any that didn't have one were removed.

  3. 3

    Check reputation

Shortlisted businesses needed at least 4.5 stars from 150+ Google reviews.

  4. 4

    Map coverage and hours

Service areas and after-hours terms come from each business's own site. If a site is unclear, we leave the detail out rather than guess.

  5. 5

    Rank the final 10

Order weighs reputation, coverage, emergency availability and how openly each business prices its work.

What doesn't affect ranking

  • Payment. Sponsored listings get a highlighted card and a label, not a higher position.
  • Business size or advertising spend.
  • Spotted something out of date? Tell us and we'll recheck it.

Checking a NSW plumber's licence

It takes about a minute, and it's the best protection you have.

  1. 1

    Ask for their licence number

A licensed plumber will give it to you straight away. NSW contractor licence numbers usually end in C, and many plumbers print theirs on their website, quotes and van.

  2. 2

    Search the NSW licence check

Building Commission NSW regulates plumbers, and Service NSW runs a free check where you can search by name, licence number or ABN. Service NSW licence check

  3. 3

    Check it covers your job

Plumbing, draining and gasfitting are separate licence categories in NSW. If your job involves sewer drains or gas, check the licence covers those categories too.

  4. 4

    Get a Certificate of Compliance

In NSW, the plumber must give you a Certificate of Compliance when they finish any plumbing or drainage work, even minor jobs like replacing tapware or a hot water system.

Plumbing in Sydney: what's different

A few local patterns worth knowing before you book.

Tree roots in sewer pipes

Tree roots get into small cracks in sewer pipes and cause many of Sydney's blockages. Sydney Water lists figs, large gums and plane trees among the trees to keep away from pipes.

Sydney Water or you?

You're responsible for the wastewater pipes on your property up to where they join Sydney Water's network. If neighbours have the same problem or the overflow is beyond your boundary, call Sydney Water on 13 20 90.

Certificates on every job

Every plumbing and drainage job in NSW needs a Certificate of Compliance. Ask for it, and keep it with your property records.

A big city, local teams

Most Sydney plumbers cover one region rather than the whole city, so response times depend on where you live. Check each listing's area and confirm your suburb when you call.

Sydney plumber FAQs

How much does a plumber cost in Sydney?

Most Sydney plumbers charge between about $92 and $230 an hour, plus a call-out fee of around $69 to $170. Small jobs like a leaking tap usually land between $92 and $300 all up. The Eastern Suburbs and Inner West tend to cost more than Western Sydney. Always ask for the price in writing before work starts.

How much does it cost to unblock a drain in Sydney?

A standard blocked drain clear typically costs $170 to $575. If the plumber needs a CCTV camera to find the problem and a high-pressure jetter to clear it, expect $400 to $1,275. Tree roots in older pipes are a common cause, and a drain that keeps blocking may need relining.

How much does a new hot water system cost in Sydney?

Installed prices usually run from about $920 to $3,450 for electric storage, $1,375 to $4,025 for gas storage, and $3,450 to $6,900 for a heat pump before rebates. If your current unit is over 10 years old and has failed, replacing it is usually better value than repairing it.

Does an after-hours plumber cost more in Sydney?

Usually. After-hours and emergency call-outs commonly cost $290 to $805 before parts and labour. Some plumbers on this list charge no call-out fee or no after-hours surcharge, so ask how the job will be priced before they head out.

What should I expect from an emergency plumber call-out?

Nine of the plumbers on this list say they answer 24/7. While you wait, turn off the water at the main stop tap, usually near the water meter. A good operator will confirm the call-out fee and how they'll charge before starting work.

Do plumbers in NSW need to be licensed?

Yes. In NSW you need a licence or certificate for any plumbing, draining or gasfitting work, whatever it costs. Owner-builders can't do this work themselves, and unlicensed work carries fines of up to $22,000 for an individual.

How do I check a plumber's licence in NSW?

Ask for their licence number, then search it on the Service NSW licence check. Check that the licence is current, that it matches the business you're dealing with, and that it covers plumbing, draining or gasfitting as your job needs.

Who fixes a blocked sewer: me or Sydney Water?

You're responsible for the wastewater pipes on your property up to where they connect to Sydney Water's network. If neighbours are affected too, or the overflow is outside your boundary, call Sydney Water on 13 20 90. If a plumber finds the blockage is in Sydney Water's pipes, you can claim reasonable costs back.

What is a Certificate of Compliance?

It's the document a NSW plumber must give you at the end of every plumbing or drainage job, confirming the work meets the standard. Drainers also give you a sewer service diagram. Keep both with your property records.

How do I choose the right plumber?

Confirm the licence, check recent Google reviews, and get a written quote before any work starts. Ask whether they charge hourly or a fixed price, and whether after-hours work costs more. Good plumbers are upfront about price and won't pressure you to decide on the spot.

Do Sydney plumbers cover the whole city?

A few do, but most focus on one region, such as the west, the Hills, the North Shore or Macarthur, to keep response times down. Check each listing's service area above and confirm your suburb when you call.

Information is a guide only. Always confirm licensing, pricing and availability directly with the business.
